Skills to Learn Before Rotations

Learning the basics and certain types of hand on skills will aid you in getting the most out of your clinical rotations. Most Physician Assistant programs integrate practicing hands on skills into the didactic curriculum.

Listed below are some basics that you should have exposure to prior to clinical rotations. If your program does not currently offer training in them I would suggest asking them to go over the topic with you . . .definitely does not hurt to ask.

  1. Injections- subcutaneous, subdermal, intramuscular

  2. Phlebotomy

  3. NG tube placement

  4. Suturing

  5. Surgical knot ties

  6. Incision and Drainage

  7. Packing a wound

  8. Splinting and Casting
