How to Study From Home

Halfway through PA school I made the decision to move back home. This was great because it saved money, but I definitely felt worried about not living with my other PA school friends, down the road from the library, and just in my own space.

Some practices that I did to ensure academic success while working from home . . .

  1. Set up a designated study space: Before the semester started up again I transformed part of the basement to a study space. I had all of my medical books and resources in that area. Working in the same spot daily creates consistency and your mind will associate work/study time with that area. Try to avoid studying in bed, if you’re like me you’ll go straight to sleep.

  2. Use a timer: Designating a certain amount of time per course pushes you to stay focused since you are then moving to your next subject. This is overall a great tool for time management which I have covered in other posts; I love it that much!

  3. Distraction List: This is a big one! Once I moved home I started to notice while studying I would remember a chore I needed to do, call I had to make, or literally anything else besides studying. Put a sticky note on your desk and any time something pops in your head write it down for later.

  4. Talk with your family: One of the biggest reasons I was able to be so successful at home was because of my supportive family. I would openly communicate about when I was taking a timed quiz (especially during PANCE prep), needed quiet, etc. They were also available when I needed an “OSCE patient”, definitely a perk o living at home.
