Networking as a Student

As a physician assistant student setting yourself up for success during clinical year is crucial for when you graduate. Networking events is actually how I landed my first job out of school because I was able to make important connections in the city I wanted to work in.

Tips and Tricks for Networking . . .

  1. Join your state society of PAs: During school I was involved in New Jersey Society of Physician Assistants. There are often positions you can hold as a student as well which would be excellent in terms of leadership experience to add to your resume

  2. Hospital events: The hospital I currently work for has an APP job fair every year. Events like this allow you to network in all different specialities as well as interact and talk to other PAs or NPs that currently work at that institution.

  3. Rotations: This is by far where you have the most opportunity to network. Get to know your preceptor and other members of the office or hospital. Make a lasting impression by writing a thank you note or doing something for the office at the end of your rotation. Finally, remember to keep in touch, you never know when you may need a reference!

  4. LinkedIn: Prior to starting clinical rotations I highly recommend making an account. As you leave rotations add Physician Assistants that you worked closely with while they still remember you. Continuously update your profile and skills.

  5. Join AAPA: The student discount is alone a reason to join….so much cheaper! In turn, you will have access to conferences, resources, JAAPA, and so much more.
