My Physician Assistant Journey
I always had a calling to the medical field, but could not quite put my finger on what I wanted to do. With an immense amount of options, pro/cons lists were my go-to solution to sort the decision out. Let me say, I had my eyes set on a medical career pretty early on in high school, probably thanks to my very type A personality. I had family members that were nurses, doctors, and had the experience of watching another family member go through PA school. I realized as I moved through high school the flexibility of the career was extremely appealing to me. I LOVED the idea of switching fields and expanding my medical knowledge in different areas. So, by junior year of high school, I was sold, physician assistant would be the dream I would start chasing.
I entered into a dual degree program at Seton Hall University; this program was a 3+3. The undergraduate degree I obtained was in Biology which was done in three years. The remaining three years were spent in physician assistant studies. Throughout my schooling, I learned a lot about my relationships with others as well as with myself but damn was it challenging. During my last year of PA school, I became involved in tutoring and advocacy of the profession which is when I found my niche. I enjoyed teaching and also found that advocacy of our profession is vitally important to the advancement of the career as a whole.
I started my first job in surgery at a large institution in Philadelphia as well as joined the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants. I currently am one of the NCCPA ambassadors as well (psstt…see more in my NCCPA post). The rest of my story in medicine is to be continued and I cannot wait to share it all with you!
